FOCUS OF THE WEEK

Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs are expanding AlphaFold AI modelās capabilities beyond protein folding to accurately predict the structures of various biological molecules, including ligands, nucleic acids, and post-translational modifications.
DeepMind uses a form of attention network, which is a deep learning technique that focuses on having the AI identify parts of a larger problem, then piece it together to obtain the overall solution.
ā”ļøInsights:
"Protein folding problem" is to understand how the amino acid sequence can determine the 3-D structure.
This advanced model offers a powerful tool for accelerating biomedical research, drug discovery, and potentially revolutionizing drug design.

ā”ļøInsights:
Many startups are currently building AI models and tools using open-source models. Itās not clear how the executive order would affect the application of open-source AI.
With the new order in place, extensive testing and regulatory requirements are expected to increase the capital burden (compliance department in AI startups, perhaps?), especially to newcomer startups. It will almost certainly limit organizationsā ability to rapidly build and deploy new models.

This investment comprises an initial $500 million and an additional $1.5 billion over time, marking Google's commitment to compete with Microsoft, a major supporter of OpenAI. Amazon had also recently announced a plan to invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic.
ā”ļøInsights:
We had seen Microsoft pouring over $13 billion into OpenAI since 2019. The success of ChatGPT has established a notable precedent in the industry for the partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft.
Google's increasing involvement with Anthropic can be seen as a direct response to this. While Anthropic, co-founded by former OpenAI executives, now securing the resources and support from deep-pocketed backers, we can anticipate a fierce fight over the throne.
